Jenny Becomes a "Heavy-Weight"
Looks like the big boys are getting into the weight-management game in a huge way. Swiss-based Nestle, the world's largest food and beverage maker, just bought Jenny Craig (annual revenue $400 million) for a cool $600 million. Sweet! (sorry couldn't resist).
What does it all mean? First off, it means Weight-Watchers and
NutriSystem will have to pay more attention as Jenny will have a lot more financial muscle to help grow the brand. More advertising, more franchisees, more stores (currently 645 worldwide) more web sales, etc.
It also signals Nestle's entry into "specialty foods" with a built-in, storefront distribution system. Very smart for them to get into the game through acquisition.
But, listen. Believe it not, as a fitness professional, you will benefit. Remember, almost all of the commercial weight-loss centers are old, mature brands. Millions of people have already failed using their faulty methodologies and restricted calorie protocol. Their myopic version of success continues to be measured through pounds-on-the-scale or inches instead of body-composition. There is absolutely no thought given to immune systems or hormonal balance.
Baby Boomers, in particular, are looking for more than weight-loss. They want overall health, energy, less chronic degenerative diseases, etc. And, they already know they won't find the answers at a commercial weight-loss center... or from their doctors!
A growing segment of boomers know they will only find viable answers and physiological protocol through EDUCATION and INFORMATION provided by fitness professionals.
